The Coffee Brief – 04/28/2026

Folks, the week kicked off with oil prices surging past $100 a barrel again and a flood of billion-dollar valuations popping up in the private market. Let's get straight to what really matters for your portfolio.

---

1. Strait of Hormuz Crisis: Oil at $100

Fact: The US and Iran are facing off in the Strait of Hormuz, a dual blockade is in place, and Brent crude has already surpassed $100 a barrel.

Verdict: I Would Reduce (short-term oil exposure). The rally is real, but the risk of diplomatic intervention or a global recession is massive. If you're positioned for oil, hold tight; if you're buying into the euphoria, be cautious.

  • Assets/Sectors: Exxon Mobil (XOM), Petrobras (PBR), energy ETFs (XLE), airline sector (JETS).

2. Anthropic at $1 Trillion (Pre-IPO)

Fact: Anthropic, OpenAI's competitor, hit a $1 trillion valuation in the private market, fueled by Alphabet (GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN).

Verdict: I Would Buy (shares of the big techs backing it, not the company itself). If you want AI exposure without the crazy IPO risk, buy GOOGL or AMZN. Anthropic's IPO could be the year's biggest, but the hype is already priced in.

  • Assets/Sectors: Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), NVIDIA (NVDA), semiconductor sector.

3. Tesla Pivots: Robotaxis and FSD as Priority

Fact: On the earnings call, Tesla (TSLA) announced it will focus on robotaxis and full self-driving, transforming cars into "revenue-generating assets."

Verdict: I Would Buy (with patience). Tesla is evolving from just a carmaker into a fleet platform. The current valuation already discounts some optimism, but execution is the key.

  • Assets/Sectors: Tesla (TSLA), Uber (UBER), fleet and logistics companies (CHRW), automotive chip sector (ON).

4. HawkEye 360 Goes Public (IPO)

Fact: Signal intelligence company HawkEye 360 (NYSE: HAWK) plans to raise up to $416 million at a $2.4 billion valuation.

Verdict: I Would Hold (on the sidelines, waiting for the open). The valuation is steep, but the geointelligence sector is hot due to geopolitical tensions. I'd only buy if the price corrects after the initial hype.

  • Assets/Sectors: HawkEye 360 (HAWK), Palantir (PLTR), Lockheed Martin (LMT), defense and satellite sector.

5. MegaETH: $1.6B Token Launching

Fact: The MegaETH token will launch on April 30 with a $1.6 billion valuation, promising high scalability for Ethereum.

Verdict: I Would Hold (my distance). The crypto market is volatile with oil prices rising. If you're already exposed to ETH or SOL, you don't need to chase new narratives. If you want to speculate, only use risk capital.

  • Assets/Sectors: Ethereum (ETH-USD), Solana (SOL-USD), Arbitrum (ARB), crypto exchanges (COIN).

6. Global Military Spending Surges: Spain +50%

Fact: Spain increased military spending by 50% to $40.2 billion, the largest rise among the top 15 global spenders, according to SIPRI.

Verdict: I Would Buy (European defense sector). The rearmament trend in Europe is solidifying. Companies like Rheinmetall and Thales could benefit, as well as defense ETFs.

  • Assets/Sectors: Rheinmetall (RNMBY), Thales (THLEF), BAE Systems (BAESF), defense ETF (ITA).

Immediate Opportunities

  • Oil and Energy: You can still ride the rally with major oil stocks (XOM, CVX) and energy ETFs, but with a tight stop loss – the risk of a ceasefire crashing oil prices is real.
  • Big Tech with AI: Alphabet (GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN) are the safest way to bet on the AI boom without the crazy IPO risk. Anthropic is their client.
  • European Defense: The rearmament in Europe is just beginning. Mid-cap companies and sector ETFs (like PPA) could deliver solid returns in the coming quarters.

Risks on the Radar

  • Stagflation: Oil at $100 + high interest rates = a recipe for recession. Keep an eye on US employment and inflation data.
  • Private AI Bubble: $1 trillion valuations without proportional revenue are reminiscent of 2021. Beware of IPOs that launch already at the top.
  • Middle East Geopolitics: Any move by Israel or Saudi Arabia could escalate the conflict and push oil to $120. That would sink consumer and tech stocks.
  • Crypto Volatility: With inflation and high interest rates, digital assets could suffer from a flight to liquidity. The MegaETH launch amidst this scenario is an invitation to violent swings.
