Market in "Risk-On" Mode: What I Would Do Now Hey everyone! I went through the weekend news and picked out what will actually move your portfolio. The mood is euphoric around AI and there's geopolitical relief, but there's a major currency catch on the radar. Let's get straight to what matters. --- 1. Trillion here, trillion there: Amazon joins the US$3T club (AMZN) The market has aggressively priced in cloud and AI. AMZN broke through the US$3 trillion market cap barrier, driven by strong AWS profits. - Effect: I would Buy on any pullback. The cloud + AI thesis still has room to run. - Assets: AMZN (Amazon), MSFT, GOOGL (Google), and the tech sector as a whole. 2. Microsoft shattered the single-day gain record (MSFT) Half a trillion dollars in a single day. MSFT rose 15.5% on 07/30, the biggest gain in US history. The market is paying a premium for companies with "real proof" of AI revenue. - Effect: I would Hold. I wouldn't buy at the top right now, but I also wouldn't sell the most defensive franchise in the sector. - Assets: MSFT, NVDA (chip supplier), and index funds like IVV (iShares S&P 500). 3. Middle East relief drops oil and saves the Dow Jones Trump called off the strike on Iran. Dow futures jumped 400 points right out of the gate. This takes pressure off inflation and gives breathing room for consumer and aviation sectors. - Effect: I would Buy cyclical and consumer discretionary sectors that suffer from expensive fuel. - Assets: airlines (AZUL4 on B3 or DAL in the US), cruise lines (CCL), and retail (MELI). 4. US-Japan intervention: the yen caught its breath, but the game has changed (JPY) For the first time in 28 years, both countries intervened together to buy yen. This is a clear signal that the Japanese government won't tolerate the exchange rate at 160. For those with dollar exposure, the cost of hedging will go up. - Effect: I would Reduce long positions in the dollar against the yen (USD/JPY). For the Brazilian investor, this is a warning: the global "carry trade" is riskier now. - Assets: JPY (currency), TLT (long-term Treasuries), and Japanese stocks (EWJ). 5. Nigeria raking it in with oil: flows to emerging markets? Nigeria pocketed N24tn in six months from oil exports. This shows commodity-exporting emerging markets are flush with cash. For Brazil, the neighbor up north doesn't compete, but the price of a barrel directly influences Petrobras (PETR4). - Effect: I would Hold PETR4. The company benefits from high prices, but the political risk (dividend intervention) keeps me cautious. - Assets: PETR4 (Petrobras), SLB (Schlumberger), and the energy ETF (XLE). 6. AstraZeneca and Bristol Myers: billion-dollar merger? (AZN) A mega-merger worth US$400 billion is being explored. This is a thermometer showing the healthcare sector is undervalued and ripe for consolidation. - Effect: I would Buy the healthcare sector as a whole. This news, even if it doesn't materialize, draws attention to a sector that had been forgotten. - Assets: AZN (AstraZeneca), BMY (Bristol Myers), and the XLV ETF (Healthcare). --- Immediate Opportunities - Watch the flows: The drop in oil after the Iran relief is a good window to build positions in consumer discretionary companies in the US. - Regional banks: With the war winding down, the yield curve could fall. Smaller US banks (KRE) tend to benefit. - Healthcare sector: The AZN/BMY merger rumor puts a "floor" under the sector. Look for companies with strong pipelines and low debt. Risks on the Radar - Currency intervention: Japan could act again. If you trade forex or have yen-denominated debt, watch out for volatility. - AI concentration: the rally is all in 5-6 stocks. If AMZN or MSFT gives weak guidance, the entire index could give back its gains in one week. - Sticky inflation: The money from the Japanese intervention doesn't "disappear"; it comes out of other markets. Keep an eye on 10-year US Treasuries (TNX). --- Sources and References - Amazon hits US$3T: Biztoc.com - link - Microsoft record: Biztoc.com - link - Dow Jones/Trump relief: Biztoc.com - link - Japan/US intervention: CNA - link - Nigeria oil: The Punch - link - AstraZeneca/Bristol: Slashdot - link _This analysis is personal opinion and does not constitute investment advice._
